A war of independence in the early 20th century was followed by the partition of the island, creating the Irish Free State, and Northern Ireland, which remained a part of the United Kingdom. The North saw much civil unrest from the late 1960s until the 1990s.


Ireland’s culture embraces elements of the culture of ancient communities, later immigrant and broadcast cultural influences. Ireland is regarded as one of the Celtic nations of Europe.


Ireland’s culture also shares many traits with that of Great Britain.
