Batatais is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The settlement an independent municipality in 1839. It became a city in 1875. In 2015 the population of mostly Italian-Brazilians was about 60,589.

There are at least four theories for the meaning of the name “Batatais”:

  • Local Native Americans cultivated potatoes. Batatais is the potato fields in portuguese.
  • A second Native American version: “BAITATA” means “river running through the rocks”.
  • Another Native American option: “MBOITATA”, snake of fire. Small gas fields exist around the area so….
  • Batatais or Batatal was an expression describing the place where gold could be found. This region was part of the old way to the Goias mines. The city was possibly a resting place for the travelers.
